Langholm Cricket Club 1st XI v Carleton on Sat 11 Sep 2021 at 14:00
Langholm Cricket Club Won by 28 runs

Match report Langholm rolled off their fourth win in a row as they beat Carleton by 28 runs. Batting first Langholm posted 169, largely due to a superb 87 from Gregor Park. A initial opening stand of 46 by the Carleton openers had Langholm worried but three quick wickets eased any concern and after that the visitors never really looked in the hunt as they posted 141 for 7 in their 40 overs.

The Carleton skipper put Langholm into bat on a typical September wicket ie green. The Langholm openers Stuart Duggan and Gregor Park rode their luck as Carleton put down some very easy catches. The score reached 49 before Duggan gave a easy caught and bowled to Cunneen for 19. Tony Steele joined Park and the scoring rate increased as they took Langholm past 100 in the 25th over. An over later Steele fell to Cunneen bowled for 27 with Langholm 113 for 2. Nicky P joined Gregor and the run rate sky rocketed, Park looked set for a 100 but fell bowled around his pads by Smith for 87 with the score 159 for 3. This started an almighty collapse as the next 7 wickets fell for 10 runs as Campbell ran through the Langholm tail taking 6 wickets. In the end Langholm finished on 169 but considering they had been 159 for 2 after 32 overs it was a bit of a disappointment.

The Carleton openers Litherland and especially Park got off to a great start adding 46 for the first wicket. The old saying 1 brings 2...or 3 proved true as after Johnstone clean bowled Park for 31, Tony Steele clean bowled Litherland next over then Johnstone trapped Rice LBW leaving Carleton 46 for 3. This brought Smith and the dangerous McDermott to the crease. They managed to add 12 more before McDermott gave a catch to young Ewan Coates giving Johnstone his third wicket. With the run rate required starting to increase the pressure was now on the Carleton batsmen. With the score on 85 after 27 overs Smith gave an easy catch to Gregor Park, who somehow made it look hard taking it one handed off his brothers bowling. The return of Dave Steele into the attack proved decisive as he bowled Powell first ball and more importantly was difficult to score off. The visitors never really looked like reaching the Langholm total and when Dave Steele clean bowled Tickner for 36 with the score on 114 in the 35th over the victory was all but sealed. Carleton finished on 141 for 7. Wicket takers for Langholm were Johnstone 3 for 23, Dave Steele 2 for 37, Tony Steel 1 for 16(probably the pick of the bowlers) and Graham Park 1 for 46, special mention to Jake Park who bowled two decisive tight overs at the end.

So that is the end of cricket at the Castleholm for the season with only the final game away against Temple Sowerby left. It was a good victory against a strong a side as Carleton have put out this year, though Langholm will be disappointed that after being 159 for 2 they finished on 169.
