Langholm Cricket Club 1st XI v Lanercost 2nds on Sat 29 Aug 2020 at 14:00
Langholm Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Langholm ran out winners by seven wickets on Saturday against Lanercost 2nds. Lanercost posted 104 which with the slow outfield and wicket might have proved a problem for Langholm considering they were bowled out for 37 in the away fixture. But Graham Park and Stuart Duggan added 77 for the first wicket and the result was basically a formality after that.

Lanercost won the toss and decided to bat first on the artificial. Runs proved difficult to come by with some tight bowling from Graham Park and Stevie Johnstone. In fact, the first wicket fell in the 2nd over with 0 on the board when Johnstone bowled Edward Lythgoe. Baker joined Dean Lythgoe and they took the score up to 37 in the 14th over before Dave Steele clean bowled Lythgoe for 20. Baker and Ferguson took the score past 50 before a double strike by Tony Steele saw the end of Ferguson for 11 caught by John Bell and Mitchelson for 0 caught by Graham Park this left the score on 64 for 4 in the 25th over. The score had reached 82 when Dave Steele clean bowled Pritchard for 6, then he clean bowled Allen for 4 to leave Lanercost 88 for 6. While wickets were falling Baker had been going along quite nicely until Hughie Donaldson pulled off a contender for catch of the season and the definite winner of the most nonchalant catch off the season, Bake drove Park to mid-on and Hughie just raised his right hand above his head and it stuck bringing to an end Baker's innings at 42. Lanercost's last three wickets managed to get them over 100 with Johnstone claiming all three first bowling J.Crabtree for 1, then trapping Skeer LBW for 3 and having N.Leigh caught at midwicket by Park for 7 leaving the visitors 104 all out. In the bowling for Langholm Johnstone too 4 for 24, D.Steele 3 for 23, T.Steele 2 for 37 and Park a miserly 1 for 14 from his 10 overs. A good all round performance in the field from Langholm with all the bowlers chipping in.

The Langholm openers Park and Duggan got off to a solid start and gradually the run rate increased as they got their eye in against some pacey bowing from Allen. They passed 50 in the 13th over. They had took the score on to 77 when Duggan holed out to Crabtree for 39 off Pritchard. Park fell(almost literaly through exhaustion) holing out on the short boundary to Pritchard for 37 with the score on 94. Alas Tony Steele only added 1 before being stumped of Crabtree. Victory was secured when Nicky P middled a six onto what used to be the racecourse leaving him 13 not out and Chris Stewart 2 not out.

In the end a good performance with Langholm with both bat and ball, you are never sure what a good score is on the artificial but with it playing straight and true 104 was never going to be enough if Langholm batted sensible.
