Lanercost Colts v Langholm Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sun 28 Jul 2019 at 14:00
Langholm Cricket Club Won by 67 runs

Match report Normally having a fixture on the weekend of the Common Riding is a no go for Langholm C.C but the 2nds were landed with an away trip to Lanercost on Sunday. Surprisingly considering the forecast a few days before Sunday turned out to be dry and sunny.
Langholm skipper Graham Park won the toss and elected to have a bat. The opening pair of John Bell and Hughie Donaldson saw off the threat of the Lanercost opening bowlers adding 33 before Hughie fell caught behind of Cottrill in the 15th over. Jamie Ashton-Smith joined Bell and they took the score to 55 for 1 at drinks (18 overs). First over after the resumption, Bell was clean bowled by Cottrill for 23, with the score still on 55. Jonathan Wilkes joined Ashton-Smith but they only added 4 as Wilkes was clean bowled by Cottrill. Jay Gordon was the next man in and a further 12 was added as the score reached 71 in the 26th over before Gordon was out for 3 off Crabtree’s bowling. This brought Nicky Piszczykiewicz to the crease to join Jas. The pair looked to attack the bowling and managed to add 45 before Big Nick fell for 25. Stuart Duggan soon followed leaving Langholm 116 for 6. With the help of Tony Steele Jas took the score to 139 passing 50 thus being forced to retire in the 35th over. With one over left Graham Park was at the crease, of the five balls he faced he managed to connect with two, hitting fours before being bowled by Crabtree. Ryan Johnstone hit a two of the last ball to leave Langholm on 149 for 7 off their 36 overs.
In reply, Lanercost got off to a poor start when Blanchard was caught behind by Graham Park off Ryan Johnstone’s bowling with only 8 on the board. Then with the score on 43 Jay Gordon struck with the last ball off his 1st over clean bowling the Lanercost skipper Baker for 20. Then with the first ball of his second he had Mitchelson caught for a duck with Hughie Donaldson taking a superb diving catch, this left the home side 44 for 3 in the 13th over. Gordon then removed Skeer clean bowling him for 11 with the score now 47 for 4. Just before drinks, Jaimie Ashton-Smith struck when a slow bouncer was mistimed by Kennedy with Gordon taking the catch leaving Lanercost 5 down for 56 after 18 overs. After the break Gordon had Cottrill caught at mid-wicket by Johnstone then to complete his five-wicket haul he had Crabtree caught by Duggan for 0, leaving Lanercost seven down. Corey Park was the next to strike when he had Sharpe caught for 6 by Duggan. A quick-fire 16 by Murray was ended when Corey had him caught at slip by Nicky P; Murray had previously survived a stumping chance off Corey that his dad fumbled. The final wicket to fall was P.Crabtree who lobbed a catch to Ashton-Smith off Ryan Johnstone’s bowling. The wicket-takers for Langholm were Gordon 5 for 15 off 6, Park 2 for 8, Johnstone 2 for 18 and Ashton-Smith 1 for 22 off his 8 overs.
A good solid all-round performance with the bat, ball and in the field with Jaimie Ashton-Smith starring with the bat and young Jay Gordon securing his first five-for with the ball; although he needs to work on his hat trick ball.
