END OF SEASON REVIEW

11 Sep 2017

Well that’s another season done and dusted, dusted being the wrong word as there has not been much dust on the Castleholm off late. We finished fifth in the League with 60 points; five wins, one winning draw, one conceded in our favour and seven defeats. We probably should have won a couple more games and possibly called a couple off that we played and were defeated but we are here to play cricket not to sit in the pub or get dragged shopping. The highlight of the season was most definitely our comprehensive victory over Division 1 Champion’s Lanercost, their only defeat of the year. Our cup run did not materialise defeated by a very good Staffield team who also achieved promotion.

Individually I think it goes without saying that our star man was our skipper Tony Steele who led the way with both runs and wickets 342 runs at an average of 28.50 including two fifties and 18 wickets at an unbelievable average of 10.61. Graham Park tied him with total wickets and was second in total runs with 328. Other notable performances with the bat were Nicky P 269 runs and one fifty and Duncan Elliott 248 runs and three fifties. Bowling wise three others achieved ten wickets or more Dave Steele with 15, Andrew Paisley with 13 and Steven Johnstone with 10. Our leading catcher was Graham Park with 8(plus two absolute dollies dropped) closely followed by his brother Gregor with 7 who also had 2 stumping’s.

I think most of the players will be pretty disappointed in general with the way the season petered out after our good start, the poor weather in the second half of the summer didn’t help along with us having rarely the same team week to week. As we look forward to 2018 it is with some sadness that one or two players have decided to retire or take a break but it is hoped that those left will step up a level and our youngsters will start to force their way into the 1st XI.
